NEWSLETTER - Issue 009

Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

This newsletter is a monthly publication from your friends at Boomers Offshore.  It's just our way of trying to stay in touch and to encourage on-going communications between family, friends or anybody interested in our lives in Costa Rica.

Adios 2010 - Hola 2011

Unless something really significant happens between now and the end of the year, this newsletter will bring to a close not just the chronological end of 2010 but the completion of 20 months of retirement living in Costa Rica.  We hope that 2011 turns out to be as good as 2010.

To all our friends and relatives back in the States, we sure miss you and all the good times we had.  And remember, the welcome mat is always here... just call first and not from the airport!

To all our new friends here in Costa Rica, Fran and I are looking forward to even better times in the upcoming year.

this month's news...

The Perfect Spot...

When my parents moved to Florida from New York City in 1948, they bought a house where they planned to raise a family and live the rest of their lives.  To them, this was their dream spot, a place they worked hard to acquire and worked even harder to maintain.  This was the house I was born into and remained for 23 years until it became time for me to start a family of my own.  Buying, selling, flipping, investing, living a nomadic lifestyle was not endemic to my parents' generation - but it was to mine.

Thought's From The Fran Side...

Even though Andy and I have been away from friends and family for almost two years, our retirement life in Costa Rica is thriving.  Don't get me wrong, I miss my family, especially during the holiday season.  Thanksgiving has always is one of my favorite holidays.  When we lived in the States, I always had a huge crowd gathering around multiple dinner tables, devouring turkey and celebrating our lives together.

It's Christmas Time: Beware Los Ladrones...

I didn't believe it when my neighbors warned me of the spike in B&E's (Breaking and Entering, aka burglaries) that occur each year around Christmas time.  But it's true.

Just the other day, three houses in our immediate area were hit.  Nobody was hurt and nobody was at home but each house reported losses of small appliances, computers and Christmas Gifts.

Meds are NOT ALWAYS Cheaper in CR...

Everybody says that medicines and drugs acquired in Costa Rica are significantly less expensive than those purchased in the U.S. or Canada.  Well let me state quite emphatically, that is NOT always the case.

When Is SPAM not SPAM?...

SPAM (aka unwanted email solicitations), the electronic equivalent of yesterday's "junk mail", is a cancer that has taken over the internet as well as your Inbox.  In an attempt to fight this disease, new tools and techniques emerge almost on a daily basis to combat this problem, none of which are 100% effective.

what's on tap for next month...

My son Mike and his girlfriend are visiting over New Years.  We hope to make a trip out to the Caribbean during his visit so there is bound to be loads of pictures and many stories to tell.

We also plan on heading over to El Coco for New Years Eve where we hear it is as crazy as New Orleans at Mardi Gras.  How many times can I yell "You want my beads?"
