Driving in Costa Rica is (at best) a challenge designed to test all of your skills as a driver.

The roads are in disrepair.  The traffic is insane.  And road rules appear to be a suggestion.

 If one doesn't care to drive their own car, public transportation is an excellent alternative. 

Costa Rica's bus system can get you virtually anywhere within the country for little more than the cost of a lunch at a roadside soda.
